Too early to start thinking about your holidays already? We don’t think so!
Let’s face it – you’ll probably never enjoy this much time off once your student days are over (insert crying face). So, don’t let those uni breaks go to waste. Give in to your wanderlust and put these top destinations on your bucket list.
Thailand
No surprise that this backpacker classic is number one on the list. It’s got stunning beaches, vibrant cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai, plenty of outdoor adventures, and the chance to volunteer with elephants. Who could resist that?!
What makes it such a great backpacker destination is the choice of excellent hostels, well-established transport routes and cheap food. (Trust us, you’ll be raving about Thailand’s street food for months!). Best of all, Thailand is the perfect starting point for a backpacking adventure around SE Asia, with Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam on the doorstep.
When to go: November to March is the best time to visit, so consider Thailand for your Christmas break.
Portugal
Portugal doesn’t get the love and attention it deserves. It’s home to vibrant culture and impressive natural attractions. For the surfers among you, Portugal is a dream destination with miles of gorgeous coastline and excellent surf spots that cater for all levels.
And if you get yourself an Interrail pass, you can combine Portugal with neighbouring Spain and travel through France enroute. Which means you can combine tapas, cheese and custard tarts for a mouthwatering adventure through Western Europe!
When to go: Portugal is nicest in the shoulder seasons, so use your Easter break to spend a week or two exploring the country.
Peru
It’s the most visited country in South America for a reason, with spectacular Inca ruins, mind-blowing mountain scenery and crazy jungle experiences. Oh, and llamas – you’ll see plenty of those too!
Peru also has a great backpacker infrastructure with hop-on hop-off bus passes that cover the country’s top sites. Plus, hostels brands like Selina offer stylish dorms and coworking spaces where you can catch up on uni assignments while you travel.
When to go: May to September is when you’ll find clear, sunny days that are ideal for trekking, so pick Peru for your summer holidays.
Australia
The land Down Under – where the weather is better, the beaches are bigger, and the road trips are way more epic. You can be living the city life in Sydney one minute, then learning to surf on the coast the next. Or trekking in bushland for the weekend.
It’s a huge country. But with a campervan or a hop-on hop-off bus pass, you can follow the popular east coast route, linking Melbourne with Brisbane, and all the way north to Cairns (if you’ve got the time).
When to go: thanks to the sheer size of the place, there’s never a bad time to visit Australia – you just need to know where to go.
